Function dictated the design of Digueño Jr. High School. Even so the campus was built without sacrificing beauty. Roof forms make a dynamic geometric statement as they jut skyward to accommodate north facing clerestory windows. These windows allow for natural illumination, reducing the dependency on artficial lighting. The need for air condititioning was eliminated through a built-in natural ventilation system. Exposed glulam beams, textured walls and bronze-tinted glass windows form the exterior of this 73,000 s.f. campus. A central assembly courtyard forms the focal point around which all structures are arranged. Built to accommodate 1,000 seventh- and eighth-graders, Diegueno was designed to enable students to easily make their way around the campus. Raised planters serve to direct student traffic patterns and protect landscaping, while also creating a serene setting within the campus. Here again, the dual purpose of beauty and function is served.
