Albany High School serves 1000 students on a 3 - acre urban site less than 2,000 feet from the Hayward fault. The school serves as a focal point within the community in that it is a major gathering place for performing arts, sports activities, adult education and public events.
The new building and the existing buildings are all located along the perimeter of the school and shelter the campus from the rest of the community. An amphitheater complete with food service was created within the interior of the campus providing a spacious and inviting gathering place for students.
The design of the new building blends with the old civic architecture, and at the same time reflects the school’s significance in the community.
Educationally, the new three-story academics building is approximately 80,000 s.f. and is zoned vertically. The ground level is the most public area of the school. It contains a large library, administration and student services space, a new technology center, TV communications classrooms and a three-story atrium entry lobby. The second and third floors are comprised of classrooms ranging from 900 to 1,600 square feet to house English, math, computer labs and science lab/lecture rooms.
