Carlsbad Community Carlsbad Unified School District Area: 14,000 s.f. Cost: $1,200,000 Occupancy: 1981 Capacity: 448 seats Art finds experesson in the Carlsbad Community Cultural Arts Center. Designed to provide unobstructed views for nearly 450 patrons, it is an outstanding setting for the finest in concerts, drama, musical comedies and speeches. Located next to Carlsbad High School, the two-story facility can be used either for student performances or – through the use of partitions – as classrooms. An off-white facade, chosen to blend with the campus, faces a large, sheltered courtyard perfect for mingling before performances and during intermissions. Upon entering the center, patrons can enjoy fine art displays in a specially designed foyer and large gallery. Inside the theater is a proscenium stage with sunken orchestra pit that serves as a thrust stage when covered. The finishing touch is the theater's ability to acoustically accommodate everything from speeches to symphonies through the use of adjustable layers of curtains and hard surfaces. Hidden behind a transonant wall, they vary reverberation and absorbtion. Such special features and thoughtful design make the Carlsbad Community Cultural Center a proud beacon for the performing arts. |
