Robert C. Cooley Middle School

Roseville City School District
Roseville, California

Located among heritage oak trees in the rolling grasslands of Roseville CA, Robert C. Cooley Middle School is a new campus for 1000 middle school students. This 80,000 square foot campus was designed to reflect Roseville's heritage as the largest railroad switching station in the west. The plan evolved from several months of planning the course curriculum and departmental goals and needs with an ed spec committee of approximately 20 participants. The ideas reflected in the plan are evolved from extensive and creative discussions and observations about existing middle school campuses. Special attributes include the conscious separation of grade level classrooms while providing convenient common-use facilities. The combination of the Multi-Use Room and Gymnasium into a flexible 'grand hall' that can function separately or jointly was a major creative decision. There is no doubt that this is a place for many large staff and community functions that might not otherwise be possible. The integration with in-school detention classrooms as part of the Adminstration wing also reflects the foresight of the staff and was addressed by the design team. All told, this campus reflects the goals and the energy of a committee that observed other schools and desired to push middle school design to something more than a simple cluster of buildings.
