Built to complement existing structures at General Dynamics' Kearny Mesa campus, the Data systems Division's Western Data Center – knows as Building 77 – duplicates the look of neighboring buildings, but houses completely different functions. the two-story building, with its exterior of enameled metal panels and solar gray glass, continues the complex's black-and-white streamlined look. inside, the 160,000 s.f. facility houses computers that perform most of General Dynamics' data processing operations west of the Mississippi. Sophisticated electronics and communications systems are sccommodated through a special design – a design that also integrates the need for tremendous cooling capabilities and for acoustics that significantly dampen noise. The main compute room features 60,000 s.f. of raised-floor, conditioned space, while the remaining 100,000 s.f. serve as office and computer support space.
