Greenfield High School

King City Joint Union High School District

Greenfield, CA

Greenfield High School is located on a 44-acre parcel of land on El Camino Real, flanked by vineyards on the south and west and a substantial housing development on the north. The wide-open spaces and the mountains surrounding the Salinas Valley are reflected in the single story design with a hip roof.
The exterior public spaces and courtyards were given as much attention as the classrooms and the interior spaces. The new Gymnasium due to its sheer size and volume anchors the other buildings on the site. The Library was designed as a lantern that shines at night through the large pyramidal skylight inviting the community into the learning environment. The Gymnasium, Library, and Multi-purpose buildings were designed to accommodate large community events.
The tan and green concrete masonry split-face blocks were selected to blend with the color of the surrounding fields and mountains.
The classroom interiors have a substantial amount of natural lighting provided through continuous skylights while at the same time developing a vocabulary of wood framed hip roofs with exposed glu-lam beams.
The project was bid as a multi-prime contract with 24 prime contractors working with the school district. This mode of delivery saved substantial sums of money for the school district and allowed them to stay within the bond allocation and State funding.
Greenfield High School is ready for the 21st Century with its state of the art computer technology systems supported by its data/ video and fiber optic infrastructure.
