North Torrance Library & Community Center

Project-in-Design

The North Torrance Library and Community Services Center is a new 15,000+ square foot multi-use library facility that is designed to replace aging and nadequate library and senior center facilities. The masterplan, by Sasaki Associates, also includes a Police Community Center and the new Herma Tillim Senior Center and Pre-School Facility. The DLM building and site design was developed to meet the many expressed needs of the community and facilities' staff. Taking advantage of the park setting was critical in allowing the building to not be overwhelmed by the adjacent busy vehicular thoroughfare, as are the current facilities. The building design provides an open and spacious feeling that creates energy efficiency via evenly distributed natural light, via naturally accommodating heating and cooling ceiling configurations and via utilizing insulated and well shaded walls and window fenestration. The ability to configure all of the planned facilities to create a common courtyard will give the community a true 'sense of place' and a 'sense of pride', both inside and outside of the facilities.
