TRW Rancho Carmel TRW - Military Electronics Division Area: 235,000 s.f. This highly sophisticated research and development facility was designed to house TRW's Military Electronics Division. As a center for development of some of the world's most advanced electronic systems, this structure serves to attract and inspire leading scientists in the field of avionics and shipboard electronics. A campus-like environment has been created here to help promote intellectual creativity among workers, while inconspicuously providing for strict physical security requirements. Lush landscaping surrounds a serene water feature that ushers employees and visitors into the facility. The building's exterior is designed for energy efficiency and is composed of tan, textured concrete and solar bronze glass which is shaded by trellised overhangs. Inside, natural sunlight streams through numerous lightwells. This design feature saves energy and creates a light, open feeling that offsets the atmosphere of high security. The 235,000 s.f. facility accommodates 450 employees and is part of a master-planned campus park that will ultimately house 2,000 employees with 700,000 s.f. |
